2003-2004 Indoor Track & Field All-Stars Announced

March 10, 2004 - Named Midland-Wachusett A League All-Stars for 2003-2004 were sophomores Dave Cosenza and Mike Carbone, juniors Craig Fiore and Phil McCormack, and senior Kevin Carriere, for capturing first place in the mile relay, and high jump, respectively, at the Mid-Wach A League Championships. Senior Everette Pankey was also selected by Mid-Wach A coaches as an at-large All-Star for his outstanding efforts in league competition throughout the season. Carriere, Fiore and Pankey were also selected to the 2003-2004 Sentinel & Enterprise Indoor Track & Field All-Star Team.


Red Raiders Celebrate The 2003-2004 Season

March 9, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men's indoor track & field team celebrated the conclusion of the 2003-2004 indoor season at a "Pot Luck" supper held Tuesday night in the Fitchburg High School Cafeteria.

Receiving recognition for their efforts during the season were senior Everette Pankey, Most Valuable Performer; senior Kevin Carriere, Coaches’ Award; junior Craig Fiore and sophomore Mike Carbone Most Improved Runners; Derek Paine, Freshman Award; and the Bull Goose Loony Award (in memory of throwing Coach Jack Jerszyk), presented to senior Adam Dufour. These athletes, along with fifteen others, earned the right to wear the "F" by earning Varsity status, for their commitment, hard work, and dedication to the sport of track and field.

Coach Woods and Coach Moore would like to personally congratulate the team, and their parents, along with everyone else who contributed to the program's success throughout the 2003-2004 season.

Announces "Pot Luck" Supper Date

March 1, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men's and women's indoor track & field teams will celebrate the conclusion of the indoor season at a "Pot Luck" supper scheduled for Tuesday, March 9, at 6:00 p.m., in the Fitchburg High School Cafeteria.

A mailing will be sent out to athletes and parents this week providing further details on the evening, which will include certificates of recognition for our athletes efforts, along with individual awards for Most Valuable Performer; Coaches’ Award; Most Improved; Freshmen Award; and the seasonal Bull Goose Loony Award (in memory of throwing Coach Jack Jerszyk). Varsity athletes will receive the right to wear the "F", for their commitment, hard work, and dedication to the sport of track & field.

Coach Woods, Coach LeBlanc, Coach Lavers, and Coach Moore would like to personally congratulate the 2003-2004 teams and all others who contributed to the program’s success throughout the indoor season.


Red Raiders Finish In Top Fifteen
At M.S.T.C.A. Pentathlon

February 25, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team ran to a fourteenth place finish at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Pentathlon held Tuesday afternoon at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Roxbury Community College.

Senior Kevin Carriere led the Red Raiders finishing 22nd out of 80 athletes, by scoring 2,674 points in the five event competition comprised of the 55 meter high hurdles, the long jump, the high jump, the shot put, and the 1000 meter run. Carriere’s points combined with the points scored by sophomores William Schuerman, 62nd place, 2,118, and David Cosenza, 71st place, 1,876, accounted for the team’s total of 6,860 points, and Fitchburg’s overall place in the meet.


Red Raiders Break School Record Again In 3200 Meter Relay
Finish Eighth Overall

February 21, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men’s 3200 meter relay team comprised of sophomore Mike Carbone, junior Craig Fiore, and seniors Loi Trieu and Everette Pankey, ran a school record 8:24.65, winning the unseeded section of the event, to finish eighth overall at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association's All-State Track & Field Championships held Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Roxbury Community College. The relay team improved by eleven positions after having entered the meet seeded nineteenth overall. Senior Kevin Carriere also represented the Red Raiders in the meet, finishing fourteenth overall in the high jump with a height of 5’ 11".

Carriere, and sophomores Dave Cosenza and William Schuerman, will compete in Fitchburg’s final track & field meet of the season, the Massachusetts State Track Coaches’ Pentathlon, to be held this Tuesday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m., also at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.


Red Raiders Qualify For All-State Final In Three Events
Fiore And Pankey Break School Records

February 14, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track and field team broke two school records, while turning in several top six performances at the 87th Annual State Indoor Track & Field Class B Championships held Saturday morning at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, Roxbury Community College.

Senior Everette Pankey led the way with a record breaking performance in the 1000 meters running 2:38.95 to finish third. Pankey then teamed with junior Craig Fiore, sophomore Mike Carbone, and senior Loi Trieu to finish fifth in the 3200 meter relay with a time of 8:34.99. Fiore also broke the school record in the 600 meters earlier in the meet, running 1:26.53 to finish eighth overall. Senior Kevin Carriere was Fitchburg’s other point scorer, finishing fifth in the high jump with a height of 5’ 11". Also representing the Red Raiders was the 1600 meter relay team comprised of senior Adam Lassila, junior Phil McCormack, Carbone, and Trieu, which finished thirteenth in a season best 3:43.11.

Pankey, Carriere, and the 3200 meter relay team will represent Fitchburg High School in next Saturday’s M.I.A.A. Indoor All-State Track & Field Meet starting at 10:30 a.m.


Red Raiders Finish A Surprising Third In District E, Division I Meet
Facility And School Records Fall For The Second Straight Year

February 7, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team ran to a surprising third place finish in the 26th Annual District E, Division I Indoor Invitational Track & Field Meet held Saturday afternoon in the Fitchburg High School field house. The meet once again featured several facility records in the shot put, 1000 meters, and one mile run, as well as one Fitchburg High School field house record by senior Everette Pankey in the 1000 meters.

The Red Raiders were led by Pankey and junior Craig Fiore, who between them scored over half of Fitchburg’s points. Pankey picked up the bronze with his time of 2:41.87 in the 1000 meters, while Fiore earned the silver in the 600 meters, running out of the unseeded heat with a time of 1:29.41. Both athletes teamed up with sophomore Mike Carbone and senior Loi Trieu to finish second in the two mile relay, as Pankey overtook St. John’s Nick Krouse at the line finishing in 8:58.91. Trieu also finished sixth in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:49.58. Senior Kevin Carriere was another big point scorer earning the silver medal in the high jump, clearing 5’ 10", and then teaming with junior Phil McCormack, and seniors Adam Lassila and Shawn McGrady, to finish sixth in the mile relay in 3:58.17

The Red Raiders now focus their efforts on preparing for next Saturday’s M.I.A.A. 87th Annual Indoor State Class B Track & Field Meet, to held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Roxbury Community College, scheduled to get under way at 9:00 a.m.


Red Raiders Turn In Season Bests
Pankey Breaks Record In 1000 Meters

February 1, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men's indoor track and field team turned in several personal and season best performances at the 27th Annual Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Invitational Track & Field Meet held Sunday morning at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Roxbury Community College.

Fitchburg was led by senior Everette Pankey, who broke his own school record in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:39.33, to place eighth overall in the event. Running personal bests in their respective events were Mike Carbone, mile, 4:54.77; Craig Fiore, 600 meters, 1:27.83; Loi Trieu, 1000 meters, 2:47.83; Shawn McGrady and Phil McCormack, 300 meters, 40.25, and 40.77, respectively; and the 800 meter relay team comprised of Andrew Carreiro, McCormack, William Schuerman, and McGrady, 1:41.69. Also representing the Red Raiders in the meet was Kevin Carriere, who competed in the high jump.

The Red Raiders host this weekend's District E Track & Field Championships with the Division I meet starting Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Field House.


3200 Meter Relay Team Breaks Record
Finishes 9th Overall At McIntyre Relays

January 25, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team broke the existing school school record in the 3200 meter relay Sunday afternoon at the Bob McIntyre Memorial New England Relays held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Roxbury Community College.

The 3200 meter relay team comprised of Craig Fiore, Mike Carbone, Loi Trieu, and Everette Pankey, broke the existing school record by 1.9 seconds, to finish ninth overall in 8:26.80. Also representing the Red Raiders was the 800 meter relay team comprised of Kevin Carriere, Phil McCormack, William Schuerman, and Dave Cosenza, which finished in 1:43.90, to place twenty-third.

Fitchburg returns to the Reggie Lewis Center next Sunday morning to compete in the 27th Annual Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Invitational Track & Field meet scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.


Carriere, Mile Relay Team
Capture Mid-Wach A Titles

January 24, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team clinched fourth place overall in Mid-Wach A by finishing fourth at the Mid-Wach A Championships held Saturday morning in the Field House. The final score of the meet was Wachusett, 122, Shrewsbury, 66, Algonquin, 58, Fitchburg, 57, Milford, 30, North Middlesex, 25, and Leominster, 14.

The Red Raiders were led by the first place performances of Kevin Carriere in the high jump, 6’, and the mile relay team comprised of Craig Fiore, Phil McCormack, Mike Carbone, and Dave Cosenza, which finished in 3:52.1. Carriere also combined with Mike Johnson, William Schuerman, and Andrew Carreiro in the 880 yard relay to finish third in that event in 1:46.7. Loi Trieu was another big point scorer for the Red Raiders, finishing third in the 1000 meters in 2:50.1, while teaming with Justin Kemp, Mike Alamed, and Dan Kirouac, to finish fourth in the two mile relay in 9:38.7. Also placing in the top six for Fitchburg were Everette Pankey in the mile, third, 4:58.1; Carbone in the mile, fourth, 4:59.0; and McCormack in the 300 meters, fourth, 40.4.

Fitchburg High School will compete tomorrow afternoon in the Bob McIntyre Memorial New England Relays, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury. The Red Raiders will compete in the 3200 meter and 800 meter relays, with the meet scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m..


Red Raiders Put Together Team Effort
3200 Meter Relay Team Qualifies For McIntyre Relays

January 17, 2004- The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team turned in several fine performances Saturday morning at the 27th Massachusetts State Coaches Class B Indoor Track & Field Relay Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Roxbury Community College.

The Red Raiders’ 3200 meter relay team comprised of Craig Fiore, Mike Carbone, Loi Trieu, and Everette Pankey ran to a third place finish in 8:29.1, narrowly missing the school record by three tenths of a second. By finishing in the top six, the 3200 meter relay team received an automatic birth in next Sunday’s Bob McIntyre Relays, which features the top relay teams in Massachusetts, along with additional relay teams from throughout the New England area. The running events for that meet are scheduled to get underway at 12:30 p.m., also at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Also competing for the Red Raiders was the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Fiore, Andrew Carreiro, Phil McCormack, and Pankey, which finished twelfth in 3:44.6; the distance medley team comprised of Carbone, Adam Lassila, Justin Kemp, and Trieu, 11:56.6, fourteenth; the shot put team comprised of Adam Dufour, James Tata, and William Schuerman, 107’ 1", sixteenth; the 800 meter relay team comprised of Mike Johnson, Kevin Carriere, McCormack, and Shawn McGrady, 1:42.1, eighteenth; the sprint medley team comprised of Dan Kirouac, Schuerman, Dave Cosenza, and Mike Gagne, 4:15.1, twentieth; and the shuttle dash team comprised of James Ball, Johnson, Schuerman, and Eldrid Wright, 24.6, twenty-first.

Running as "B" Teams for the Red Raiders was the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Garrett Malouin, Kemp, Mike Alamed, and Cosenza, 4:00.5, twenty-second; and Ball, T.J. Bujold, Derek Paine, and Conrad Hanno, 800 meter relay, 1:54.1, thirty-fifth.

The Red Raiders host the Mid-Wach A Championships next Saturday morning starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Field House.


Red Raiders Put It Together
Sweep Leominster and North Middlesex Regional

January 7, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team put together some fine performances Wednesday night, as they swept their double-dual meet in the Fitchburg High School Field House, defeating Leominster, 53-33, and North Middlesex Regional, 59-27.

The Red Raiders were led by senior Loi Trieu, who won the two mile, 11:17.9, and finished second in the 1000 meters, 2:53.3, in both meets. Against Leominster individual wins went to Everette Pankey, 1000 meters, 2:44.6; Mike Carbone, mile, 4:55.9; Andrew Carreiro, 55 meters dash, 7.0; Adam Lassila, 600 meters, 1:38.0; Kevin Carriere, high jump, 5’ 8"; and the mile relay team comprised of David Cosenza, Lassila, William Schuerman, and Shawn McGrady, 4:03.3. Finishing second for Fitchburg were Catalino Mateo, 55 meter high hurdles, 10.4; Cosenza, high jump, 5’; and in a tie in the 300 meters, McGrady and Phil McCormack, 40.9. Completing the scoring with third place performances were Dan Kirouac, two mile, 11:57.8; Jose Cruz, 55 meter high hurdles, 10.4; Mike Alamed, mile, 5:33.3; Adam Dufour, shot put, 40' 4.75"; and Craig Fiore, 1000 meters, 2:55.7.

Versus North Middlesex Regional the Red Raiders had first place performances from Mateo, 55 meter high hurdles; Carreiro, 55 meter dash; Carriere, high jump; McGrady and McCormack, 300 meters; Pankey, 1000 meters; and Cosenza, Lassila, Schuerman, and McGrady, mile relay. Second place performances went to Cruz, 55 meter high hurdles; Carbone, mile; Lassila, 600 meters; Dufour, shot put; and Cosenza, high jump. Third place performances went to Kirouac, two mile; Alamed, mile; James Tata, shot put, 38’ 1.5"; and Fiore, 1000 meters.

The Red Raiders travel to the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, Saturday morning, January 17th, to compete in the Massachusetts State Class B Relay Championships with the meet scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.


Red Raiders Get Swept
Carriere Sets FHS Facility Record

January 3, 2004 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team was swept in their double-dual meet held Saturday morning in the Fitchburg High School Field House, losing to the Shrewsbury Colonials, 54-32, and the Wachusett Regional Mountaineers, 62-24.

The Red Raiders were led by senior Kevin Carriere, who won the high jump setting a Fitchburg High School facility record with a leap of 6' 2.25". Against Shrewsbury Everette Pankey captured two first place finishes, winning the mile, 4:53.7, and 1000 meters, 2:47.2. Winning one event each was Mike Carbone in the two mile, 11:15.0, and Craig Fiore in the 600 meters, 1:31.5. Finishing second for Fitchburg were Loi Trieu, mile, 5:04.3, and Andrew Carreiro, 55 meter dash, 7.2. Completing the scoring with third place finishes were Adam Dufour, shot put, 39' 10", and Shawn McGrady, 300 meters, 42.0.

Versus Wachusett Regional the Red Raiders had first place performances from Carriere and Dufour, in the high jump, and shot put, respectively. Second place performances went to Fiore, 600 meters; McGrady, 300 meters; and Pankey, 1000 meters, while third place finishes went to Kyle Scachetti, shot put; Pankey, mile; Carbone, 1000 meters; and David Cosenza, 300 meters, and high jump.

The Red Raiders host Leominster and North Middlesex Regional this Wednesday night with that meet scheduled to get underway at 5:00 p.m.


Red Raiders Earn Split
Defeat Scarlet Hawks, But Fall To Tomahawks

December 20, 2003 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team earned a split in their double-dual meet Saturday morning at the Fitchburg High School Field House, defeating the Milford Scarlet Hawks, 50-36, but falling to the Algonquin Regional Tomahawks, 51-35.

Against Milford Everette Pankey, 1000 meters, 2:54.3, and Loi Trieu, mile, 5:06.4, won one event each, while earning runner-up positions in the two mile, 11:01.8, and 1000 meters, 2:57.6, respectively. Other first place performances were turned in by Jim Tata, shot put, 37' 2.25"; Craig Fiore, 600 meters, 1:31.8; Shawn McGrady, 300 meters, 41.5; and the mile relay team comprised of Carreiro, Adam Lassila, Phil McCormack, and Fiore, 4:00.0. Finishing second for Fitchburg were Adam Dufour, shot put, 36' 4.75"; McCormack, mile, 5:09.0; and Carreiro, 55 meter dash, 7.2. Completing the scoring with third place finishes were Mike Johnson, high jump, 5', 55 meter dash, 7.2, and 300 meters, 42.7; and Mike Carbone, 1000 meters, 2:59.9.

Versus Algonquin Regional the Red Raiders had first place performances from Pankey in the two mile and 1000 meters; Trieu in the mile; Fiore in the 600 meters; and Carreiro, Lassila, McCormack, and Fiore in the mile relay. Second place went to Trieu in the 1000 meters, while third place finishes went to Carbone, two mile and 1000 meters; Tata, shot put; Carreiro, 55 meter dash; Johnson, high jump; and McGrady, 300 meters.

The Red Raiders host Shrewsbury and Wachusett Regional, Saturday, January 3, 2004, with that meet scheduled to get underway at 9:00 a.m.


Red Raiders Humbled By Veteran St. John's Team
In Season Opener

December 17, 2003 - The Fitchburg High School men’s indoor track & field team opened it's season with a humbling, 73-13, defeat against a veteran St. John's team Wednesday night at the Fitchburg High School Field House.

The Red Raiders managed only one first place performance, as senior Kevin Carriere captured the high jump with a leap of 6', equaling the Field House record for a Fitchburg High School athlete set by Ben Roberts in 2001. Fitchburg also managed to record only one second place performance in the meet, as senior Everette Pankey finished the two mile in 11:02.7, just edging out a St. John's runner for the runner-up spot. Pankey was also third in the 1000 meters finishing in 2:57.2. Completing the scoring with third place finishes were Mike Carbone, mile, 5:07.8; James Tata, shot put, 38' 7"; Adam Lassila, 600 meters, 1:39.4; and Shawn McGrady, 300 meters, 41.6.

The Red Raiders host Algonquin Regional and Milford Saturday morning with that meet scheduled to get underway at 9:00 a.m.
