2005 Outdoor Track & Field Team Celebrate Season

June 14, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men's 2005 outdoor track & field team celebrated the conclusion of the season Tuesday night in the Fitchburg High School "Cafe", with a "Pot Luck" supper sponsored by the teams' parents and coaches. The supper was followed by the presentation of individual and team awards provided by the Fitchburg High School coaching staff, and the athletic department.

Athletes recognized for their contribution to this year’s team included seniors Andrew Carreiro, Austin Douglas, Craig Fiore, and Phil McCormack. Douglas received the Most Valuable Performer; Carreiro and McCormack, the Coaches' Awards; Garrett Malouin, the Most Improved Athlete; Eric Faucher, the Freshman Award; and Derek Paine, the annual Bull Goose Loony Award (in memory of throwing Coach Jack Jerszyk). Varsity and Junior Varsity Awards were also presented to all athletes who have earned the right to wear the "F", for their commitment, hard work, and dedication to the sport of track & field.

Coach Lavers, Moore, Scott, and Woods would like to personally congratulate the men's team, and all others who contributed to the program’s success throughout the 2005 season.


Douglas, Fiore, and McCormack Compete In Their Final Meet For The Red Raiders

June 11, 2005 - Fitchburg High School seniors Austin Douglas, Craig Fiore, and Phil McCormack competed in their final meet as a member of the Red Raiders' outdoor track & field team Saturday at the 60th New England Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet, hosted by Thorton Academy, in Saco, Maine.

Douglas, competing in the discus, finished fourth with a throw of 164' 11", while Fiore and McCormack combined with junior Mike Carbone and sophomore Garrett Malouin, to finish twentieth in the 3200 meter relay with a time of 8:25.31.

The Red Raiders will celebrate the end of their season Tuesday night, at 6:00 p.m., in the Fitchburg High School "Cafe", with a "Pot Luck" supper, sponsored by the teams' parents and coaches. The evening will conclude with several special individual awards, as well as Varisty and Junior Varsity awards for all team members.


Red Raiders Finish Fifteenth At Central Massachusetts Decathlon
Schuerman Finishes Twenty-Fifth Overall

June 7 & 8, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team combined for a fifteenth place finish in the team standings at the 23nd Annual Central Massachusetts District E Decathlon, held at Shrewsbury High School. One hundred and fifty-one athletes representing twenty-six teams competed in the two day event that features the 100 meters, long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put, javelin, 110 meter high hurdles, 400 meters and 1500 meters.

The Red Raiders were led by junior Will Schuerman, who finished 25th overall with 4,541 points. Schuerman combined with fellow junior Dave Cosenza, 67th, 3,821 points, and freshman Tim Douglas, 84th, 3,471 points, for the team total of 11,833 points.

Also competing for Fitchburg was sophomores Derek Paine, 113th, 3,039 points, and German Valdez, 134th, 2,517 points.

400 Meter Relay Team Runs Fastest Time Of Season

June 4, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team turned in several outstanding performances on Saturday at the 2005 State Championships held at Worcester State College. Senior Austin Douglas finished second in the discus with a throw of 162’ 2”, while the 3200 meter relay team comprised of Phil McCormack, Mike Carbone, Garrett Malouin, and Craig Fiore, finished seventh in a school record 8:10.93, which earned them the opportunity to compete in the New England Championships next Saturday at Thorton Academy in Saco, Maine. Douglas also competed in the javelin, finishing fifteenth with a throw of 155’ 9”. The 400 meter relay team comprised of Josh Mathieu, Andrew Carreiro, Mike Johnson, and Malcolm Wilbur also represented Fitchburg, finishing twentieth overall, buy running a season best 45.36.

Fitchburg travels to Shrewsbury High School this Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon to compete in the 23rd District E Central Massachusetts Decathlon scheduled to start each day at 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Finish Third In Central Mass Track & Field Tournament
Douglas Named Most Outstanding Male Athlete For Second Year In A Row

May 28, 2005- The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team ran to a surprising third place finish at the 2005 M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Track & Field Championship held Saturday at Shrewsbury High School. The Red Raiders finished with 42 points to secure their position in the meet behind team champion Westboro with 74.2 points, and runner-up St. John’s, which finished with 64 points.

Fitchburg was led by Austin Douglas, who for the second year in a row captured district titles in his two specialties, the discus and javelin. His throw of 166' 6" in the discus was a district and school record, breaking the M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Track & Field Tournament record set in 1999 by Charles Perron, of Blackstone-Millville Regional, by six and one half feet. Douglas also recorded first place in the javelin with a toss of 175’ 11" on his sixth and final throw, and in so doing, was named recipient of the prestigious John Wallace Outstanding Male Athlete Award for an unprecedented two years in a row.

Senior Craig Fiore was the Red Raider’s other leading point scorer, finishing second in the 800 meters with a career best 1:58.05, which also was a school record, breaking the previous mark of 2:00.4 set by Craig Cormier in 1990. Fiore then ran anchor for the 3200 meter relay team comprised of Phil McCormack, Mike Carbone, and Garrett Malouin, which also finished second in a season best 8:22.49. Also placing in the top six was the 400 meter relay team comprised of Josh Mathieu, Mike Johnson, Andrew Carreiro, and Malcomb Wilbur, which finished fourth in a season best 45.44. Wilbur was also fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.77.

Also competing for the Red Raiders were Mathieu in the 100 meters, seventh, 11.82; Will Schuerman, triple jump, ninth, 40' 11"; Derek Paine, discus, eleventh, 116' 8"; Mike Bellio, Andrew Wright, Dave Cosenza, and Schuerman, 1600 meter relay, twentieth, 3:51.41; Andrew Carreiro, 200 meters, twenty-fifth, 24.89; Cosenza, high jump; and Mike Dateo, pole vault.

Douglas and Fiore, along with the 400 meter, and 3200 meter relay teams will represent Fitchburg High School at next Saturday’s State Championships to be held at Worcester State College with the field events scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m.


2005 Midland-Wachusett A League All-Stars Announced

May 26, 2005- Named Midland-Wachusett A League All-Stars for 2005 were seniors Craig Fiore and Austin Douglas, by virtue of their first place performances at the Mid-Wach A League Championships held May 19 at Crocker Field.


Red Raiders Complete 2005 Dual Meet Season
Douglas Captures Three Events

May 23, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team completed their 2005 dual meet season at 4-3, by defeating Mid-Wach B rival Oakmont Regional, 84-61, Monday afternoon at Crocker Field.

The Red Raiders were led by triple event winner Austin Douglas, who captured the discus, 149’, javelin, 156’ 6", and the 110 meter high hurdles, 16.3, while earning the runner-up spot in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in 45.4. Individual wins went to Derek Paine, shot put, 36’ 10.5"; Mike Carbone, two mile, 11:19.6; Josh Mathieu, 100 meters, 11.4; Craig Fiore, mile, 5:00.3; and Phil McCormack, 800 meters, 2:10.6. The 400 meter relay team comprised of Mathieu, Mike Johnson, Andrew Carreiro, and Malcomb Wilbur were also first in 46.6; as was the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Carbone, Fiore, Dave Cosenza, and Will Schuerman, which finished with a time of 3:47.2.

Second place performances were turned in by Cosenza, high jump, 5’ 6", and 400 meters, 55.6; Wilbur, long jump, 18’ 6"; Devan Glenny, two mile, 11:30.3; Schuerman, triple jump, 36’ 11.25"; and Garrett Malouin, mile, 5:02.6, and 800 meters, 2:11.5. Completing the scoring by finishing third were Bill Nguyen, shot put, 34’ 3.25", and javelin, 112’ 5"; Mathieu, long jump, 18’ .25"; Wilbur, 100 meters, 11.7; Johnson, 300 meter intermediate hurdles, 46.9; Mike Dateo, pole vault, 10’; and Carreiro, 200 meters, 25.2.

Fitchburg travels to Shrewsbury High School this coming Saturday to compete in the M.I.A.A. 2005 Central Massachusetts Track & Field State Qualifying Tournament scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.


Red Raiders Finish Fourth
At 2005 Mid-Wach A Championships

May 19, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team finished fourth overall at the 2005 Mid-Wach A Track & Field Championships held Thursday afternoon at Crocker Field. The final scores in the meet were Shrewsbury, 132, Algonquin Regional, 103, North Middlesex Regional, 96, Fitchburg, 77, Wachusett Regional, 56, Leominster, 48, and Milford, 45.

For the second year in a row the Red Raiders were led by Austin Douglas, who finished first in the javelin, 179’ 8", and the discus, 157’, and fourth in the 110 meter high hurdles in 16.4. Craig Fiore was the next big point scorer finishing first in the mile in a career best 4:32.1, and third in the 800 meters in 2:06.1.

Also scoring valuable points for Fitchburg by placing in the top six were Mike Carbone, two mile, third, 10:39.4; the 3200 meter relay team comprised of Mike Bellio, Phil McCormack, Devan Glenny, and Garrett Malouin, third, 8:56.3; the 400 meter relay team comprised of Andrew Wright, Mike Johnson, Andrew Carreiro, and Malcolm Wilbur, fourth, 47.0; the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Will Schuerman, Dave Cosenza, Bellio, and Carbone, fourth, 3:46.9; Cosenza, high jump, fourth, 5’ 8"; Schuerman, triple jump, fourth, 38’ 2"; Derek Paine, discus, fourth, 118’ 9"; Wilbur, 100 meters, fifth, 11.5; Malouin, mile, fifth, 4:49.1; and McCormack, 800 meters, fifth, 2:07.4.

The Red Raiders host Oakmont Regional this afternoon at Crocker Field with the meet scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Finish Fifth In Class A

May 14, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team competed to a fifth place finish Saturday at the Forty-Fourth Annual Ralph A. Colson Memorial Track & Field Class A Championship hosted by Shrewsbury High School.

The Red Raiders were led by Austin Douglas, who captured his two specialties, the discus, 149' 8", and the javelin, 188' 9". His throw in the javelin was 12 feet beyond his personal best, and missed the school record by only 10 inches. The 3200 meter relay team comprised of Craig Fiore, Mike Carbone, Phil McCormack, and Garrett Malouin also ran a season best, finishing second in 8:34.30. Also contributing to the team’s efforts by placing in the top six were Derek Paine, discus, third, 120' 7"; Mike Dateo, pole vault, fourth, 11'; Dave Cosenza, high jump, fifth, 5' 6"; and Malouin, mile, sixth, 4:51.61.

Also competing for Fitchburg were Will Schuerman, long jump and triple jump; Josh Mathieu, 100 meters and long jump; Malcolm Wilbur, 100 meters and long jump; Mike Johnson, 300 meter intermediate hurdles and high jump; Tim Douglas, discus and 110 meter high hurdles; Carbone, two mile; Lekan Bamgbose, 110 meter high hurdles; Andrew Carreiro, 200 meters; and the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Cosenza, Johnson, Carreiro, and Mike Bellio.

Fitchburg will host the Mid-Wach A Championship this Thursday afternoon at Crocker Field with the field events getting underway at 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Even It Up
Defeat Blue Devils In Convincing Fashion

May 6, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team evened it’s record at 3-3, defeating arch-rival Leominster, 98-47, in a Mid-Wach A contest held Friday afternoon at Crocker Field.

The Red Raiders were led by Austin Douglas, who had an outstanding meet capturing four events. Douglas produced a personal record in the javelin throwing a career best 176’ 2", with the other first place performances coming in the discus, 150’ 4", 110 meter high hurdles, 17.1, and 300 meter intermediate hurdles, 46.7. Will Schuerman was a double winner, picking up firsts in the long jump, 18’ 8", and triple jump, where he produced a personal best 40’ 2.25". Other first place performances were turned in by Mike Carbone, two mile, 11:08.8; Mike Dateo, pole vault, 10’ 6"’; Josh Mathieu, 100 meters, 12.1; and Craig Fiore, mile, 4:48.8. The 400 meter relay team comprised of Mathieu, Mike Johnson, David Garay, and Malcomb Wilbur were also first in 47.1; while the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Carbone, Fiore, Dave Cosenza, and Mike Bellio, also finished first in 3:47.8.

Finishing in second for Fitchburg were: Cosenza, high jump, 5’ 4", 400 meters, 56.2, and pole vault, 7’; Derek Paine, shot put, 35’ 3", and discus, 118’ 6"; Garrett Malouin, two mile, 11:17.8, and 800 meters, 2:13.5; Wilbur, 100 meters, 12.2; Johnson, 300 meter intermediate hurdles, 48.0; and Schuerman, 200 meters, 25.4. Completing the scoring with third place performances were German Valdez, pole vault, 6’; Brian Withington, shot put, 34’ 5"; Mathieu, long jump, 18’ 6.75"; Johnson, triple jump, 33’ 10.5", and high jump, 5’ 4"; Tim Douglas, discus, 100’ 9"; and Bellio, 400 meters, 57.1.

The Red Raiders now prepare for next Saturday’s District E Class A Championships hosted by Shrewsbury High School with the meet scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.


Tomahawks Outrun Red Raiders In Marlboro

May 3, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team saw their record drop to 2-3, losing to the Tomahawks of Algonquin Regional, 87-58, in a dual meet held Tuesday afternoon at Marlboro High School due to construction at the Tomahawk's home track.

The Red Raiders were once again led by Austin Douglas, who captured two events, the discus, 148' 4", and the javelin, 167' 6", while finishing second in the 110 meter high hurdles in 16.5. Individual wins for Fitchburg went to: Mike Carbone, two mile, 10:46.4; Mike Dateo, pole vault, 10’ 6"; and Craig Fiore in the mile, 4:40.3. The Red Raiders also received first place performances from the 400 meter relay team comprised Josh Mathieu, Michael Johnson, David Garay, and Malcomb Wilbur, 46.2; and the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Mike Bellio, Carbone, Will Schuerman, and Fiore, 3:43.1.

Second place performances were turned in by Derek Paine, discus, 113' 1"; Dave Cosenza, high jump, 5’ 8"; Phil McCormack, 800 meters, 2:09.7; Johnson, 300 meter intermediate hurdles, 46.7; and Garrett Malouin, mile, 4:55.8. Completing the scoring with third place performances were turned in by Schuerman, long jump, 18' 7.5"; Cosenza, 400 meters, 55.2; Mathieu, 100 meters, 12.0; Paine, shot put, 35'; and Andrew Carreiro, 200 meters, 24.7.

The Red Raiders host arch-rival Leominster in a co-ed meet this Friday afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Finish Ninth At District E Division I Relays

April 30, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team ran to a ninth place finish in Division I Saturday at the 29th Annual District E Robert Duncan Invitational Relays held at Pioneer Field in Shrewsbury.

The Red Raiders scored 17.5 points overall to earn their position in a meet. The team championship once again went to St. John’s (Shrewsbury), who outdistanced runner-up Westboro for the second year in a row.

Fitchburg was by the first place performance of the discus team comprised of Austin Douglas, Derek Paine, and Tim Douglas, who combined for a total of 372’ 2" to outdistance the rest of the field by over 85 feet. Also scoring points for Fitchburg by placing in the top six was the 400 meter relay team comprised of Josh Mathieu, Michael Johnson, David Garay, and Malcomb Wilbur, which finished fourth in 46.3; the distance medley team comprised of Phil McCormack, Dave Cosenza, Mike Carbone, and Craig Fiore, fifth, 11:14.6; the long jump team comprised of Will Schuerman, Mathieu, and Wilbur, 52’ 1.5", sixth; and the high jump team comprised of Cosenza, Andrew Wright, and Johnson, which tied for sixth with a total of 15’ 4".

The Red Raiders travel to Marlboro Tuesday afternoon, where they will take on the undefeated Algonquin Regional Tomahawks in a Mid-Wach A meet scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.

Douglas Breaks Facility and School Record Again In Discus

April 25, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team evened their record at 2-2, defeating Mid-Wach A opponent, Wachusett Regional, 83-61, Tuesday afternoon at Crocker Field.

The Red Raiders were led by Austin Douglas, who captured three events, the discus, 164’, the javelin, 162’ 4", and 110 meter high hurdles, 16.4, while also finishing third in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles, 47.1. Douglas’s throw in the discus once again broke the school record and the Crocker Field facility record. Individual wins for Fitchburg went to: Will Schuerman, triple jump, 38’ 9.5"; Mike Carbone, two mile, 11:12.3; Malcomb Wilbur, 100 meters, 11.9; Andrew Carreiro, 200 meters, 24.6; and Mike Dateo, pole vault, 10’ 6". The Red Raiders also received first place performances from the 400 meter relay team comprised of Josh Mathieu, Catalino Mateo, David Garay, and Wilbur, 46.5; and the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Carbone, Mike Bellio, Dave Cosenza, and Craig Fiore, 3:48.1.

Second place performances were turned in by Derek Paine, shot put, 36’ 3"; Cosenza, high jump, 5’ 4"; and Schuerman, long jump, 18’ 9.5", and 200 meters, 25.2. Completing the scoring with third place performances were Brian Withington, shot put, 35’; Johnson, high jump, 5’ 4", and triple jump, 34’ 6.5"; Bellio, 400 meters, 57.4; Tim Douglas and Lekan Bamgbose, 110 meter high hurdles, tie, 19.3; Phil McCormack, 800 meters, 2:10.8; and Paine, discus, 105’ 8".

The Red Raiders travel to St. John’s (Shrewsbury) this Saturday morning to compete in the 29th Annual District E Invitational Relays with that meet scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.


North Middlesex Defeats Red Raiders
Douglas Breaks School And Facility Records In The Discus

April 15, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team lost for the second time this season, falling to North Middlesex Regional, 95-50, Friday afternoon at Crocker Field.

The Red Raiders were led by Austin Douglas, who captured three events. Douglas broke his own school record in the discus, with a toss of 160’ 4", which also broke the Crocker Field facility record of 159’ 8", set by Oakmont’s Steve Anderson in 1998. Douglas also picked up wins in the javelin, 161’ 2", and the 110 meter high hurdles, 17.3. Other first place performances were turned in by Mike Carbone, two mile, 10:38.4; Mike Dateo, pole vault, 11’; Phil McCormack, 800 meters, 2:15.1; and 1600 meter relay team comprised of Andrew Carreiro, Mike Bellio, Dave Cosenza, and Carbone, 3:54.5.

Finishing in second for Fitchburg were Cosenza, high jump, 5’ 8", and 400 meters, 55.5; Garrett Malouin, mile, 4:58.8, and 800 meters, 2:15.2’ Completing the scoring with third place performances were Mike Johnson, high jump, 5’ 6", triple jump, 33’ 6.25", 100 meters, 12.0, and 300 meter intermediate hurdles. 48.4; McCormack, two mile, 11:20.5; and Derek Paine, discus, 117’ 5".

The Red Raiders host Wachusett Regional next Tuesday at Crocker Field with that meet scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Earn First Win Of The Season

April 12, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team earned their first win of the season, defeating Mid-Wach A opponent, Milford, 79-57, on the Scarlet Hawks' home track.

The Red Raiders were led by Dave Cosenza and Austin Douglas, who captured two events each. Douglas picked up wins in the discus, 142' 7", and javelin, 155' 6", while Cosenza won the high jump, 5' 8", and the 400 meters in 56.3. Individual wins went to Will Schuerman, long jump, 17' 8"; Phil McCormack, two mile, 11:20.0; Garrett Malouin, 800 meters, 2:14.5; Craig Fiore, mile, 4:48.9; and the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Andrew Carreiro, McCormack, Cosenza, and Fiore, 3:56.9.

Second place performances were turned in by Mike Carbone, 800 meters, 2:17.6, and mile, 5:02.1; Cosenza, long jump, 17' 7.5"; Malouin, two mile, 11:42.4; Brian Withington, shot put, 36' 3"; Schuerman, triple jump, 35' 4"; Josh Mathieu, 100 meters, 11.8; Mike Bellio, 400 meters, 57.0; Derek Paine, discus, 108' 7"; and Catalino Mateo, 200 meters, 24.5. Completing the scoring with third place performances were Malcomb Wilbur, 100 meters, 12.1; Austin Douglas, 300 meter intermediate hurdles, 48.8; and Tim Douglas, discus, 89' 7".

The Red Raiders host North Middlesex this Friday afternoon with that meet scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.

Douglas Breaks School Record In Discus

April 8, 2005 - The Fitchburg High School men’s outdoor track & field team dropped a hard fought 74-71 decision to Mid-Wach A rival Shrewsbury, in the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Crocker Field.

The Red Raiders were led by Austin Douglas and William Schuerman, who captured two events each, while also scoring points in two others. Douglas started off his 2005 season with a record breaking toss in the discus, throwing 156' 3", and equaling his best in the javelin with a throw of 170'. Douglas also finished second in the 110 meter high hurdles, 17.1, and the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in 48.7. Schuerman picked up wins in the long jump, 18' 3.5", and triple jump, 37' 11.5", while finishing third in the 400 meters, 56.2, and 200 meters, 25.3. Other first place performances were turned in by Mike Carbone, mile, 4:57.8; Dave Cosenza, high jump, 5' 10"; Craig Fiore, 800 meters, 2:05.4; the 400 meter relay team comprised of Josh Mathieu, Catalino Mateo, David Garay, and Malcomb Wilbur, 46.4; and the 1600 meter relay team comprised of Andrew Carreiro, Carbone, Phil McCormack, and Fiore, 3:52.8.

Second place performances were turned in by Wilbur, long jump, 18' 1"; Garrett Malouin, two mile, 11:28.5; Mathieu, 100 meters, 11.6; Cosenza, 400 meters, 55.6; and Derek Paine, discus, 117' 6". Completing the scoring with third place performances were Mathieu, long jump, 18' .75"; Mike Dateo, pole vault, 10'; Paine, shot put, 36' 8"; Mateo, 100 meters, 11.7; and McCormack, mile, 5:08.7.

The Red Raiders travel to Milford next Tuesday with that meet scheduled to get underway at 4:00 p.m.
