2001 Fall Sports Banquet

December 6, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team celebrated the conclusion of the cross country season at the annual Fall Sports Banquet hosted in the Fitchburg High School Cafe Thursday night.

Receiving recognition for their efforts were Thomas Laakso and Bryan Marotta, Co-Most Valuable Performers; Marotta, the annual Mark Gionet Award for first against Leominster; Most Improved Runners went to Craig Babineau, Adam Basilio, Everette Pankey, Jeremy Reid, and Loi Trieu; and the Coach's Award to Paul Merrill. These athletes, along with Chris Kanclerowicz, Justin Kemp and Andrew Miner, received the right to wear the "F" by earning Varsity Letters for their hard work and dedication.

Coach Woods would like to personally congratulate his team and all others who contributed to the team's success throughout the 2001 season..


2001 Midland-Wachusett A League
Worcester Telegram & Gazette All-Stars Announced

November 25, 2001- Named Midland-Wachusett A League All-Stars for 2001 were Thomas Laakso, Bryan Marotta, and Everette Pankey for their top 10 performances in the League Championship. Laakso and Marotta were also selected as Worcester Telegram & Gazette All-Stars for their performances in the MIAA Central Massachusetts Cross Country Division I Championship.


Red Raiders Finish Tenth In State Division I Championship
Overtake St. John's and Wachusett For Best Finish Amongst Central Massachusetts Teams

November 17, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team ran to a tenth place finish in the M.I.A.A. Division I State Cross Country Championship held Saturday afternoon at the Tuft's University's Farm Course in Grafton. The Red Raiders finished with 274 points, three points ahead of St. John's, which finished eleventh, and sixty-six points ahead of fifteenth place Wachusett Regional.

The Red Raiders were once again led by co-captains Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso, who finished thirty-sixth, 16:41.1, and sixtieth, 17:06.3, respectively, over the 5 K course. Sophomores Everette Pankey, eightieth, 17:27.6; Jeremy Reid, ninety-fifth, 17:42.8; Craig Babineau, one-hundred and first, 17:49.1; and Loi Trieu, one-hundred and eighth, 17:53.8; along with junior Adam Basilio, one-hundred and thirty-fourth, 18:48.8, completed the team scoring.

In their final race of the season, the Red Raiders improved once more, lowering their per man average on the Farm Course of 17:30.2 at the Mid-Wach A Championship on October 26th, to a solid 17:21.3 in Saturday's race.


Red Raiders Finish Third
At The M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Division I Championship
Qualify For The All-State Meet At Tufts

November 10, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team ran to a third place finish in the M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Division I Cross Country Championship held Saturday morning at the Gardner Golf Course. In what turned out to be a three team race in the twenty-two team Division I field, Wachusett Regional finished first with 61 points, followed by St. John's, 76, and Fitchburg, 83.

The Red Raiders were once again led by co-captains Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso, who finished fourth, 15:13, and sixth, 15:19, respectively, over the 2.9 mile course. Sophomores Everette Pankey, fifteenth, 15:54; Jeremy Reid, twenty-sixth, 16:13; Craig Babineau, thirty-second, 16:25; and Loi Trieu, fifty-second, 16:46, along with junior Adam Basilio, eighty-seventh, 17:22, completed the team scoring.

As a team, the Red Raiders lowered their per man average in the 2000 race of 17:31, to a solid 16:17 in Saturday's race. For their efforts the Red Raiders will be one of sixteen teams to compete in the All-State Meet Division I Championships to be held at the Tuft's University's Farm Course in Grafton this coming Saturday. Race time will be at 12:30 p.m.


Sophomore Red Raiders Finish Fourth In State Invitational
Upperclassmen Tune-up For Districts

November 3, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's tenth grade cross country team ran to a fourth place finish in the 26th Annual Division I Cross Country Invitational Meet held Saturday morning at Franklin Park, Boston. The top four teams in the twenty-two team meet were St. John's Prep. (Danvers), 173, Nashoba Regional, 211, B.C. High School, 249, and Fitchburg, 262. Leading the sophomore Red Raiders over the 5K course was Everette Pankey, who finished twelfth in 17:41. Jeremy Reid, twenty-third, 17:59; Loi Trieu, forty-first, 18:15; Craig Babineau, forty-sixth, 18:18, and Justin Kemp, one hundred and fortieth, 20:12, completed the scoring.

In the 11th and 12th grade Division I non-team scoring race co-captains Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso finished thirteenth, 16:49, and twenty-sixth, 17:18, respectively, while Adam Basilio finished one hundred and ninety-three, 19:41; Chris Kanclerowicz, two hundred and eighty-seven, 22:07; Paul Merrill, three hundred and two, 22:31; and Andrew Miner, three hundred and twenty-six, 26:09 to round out the Red Raider performances.

The Red Raiders travel to the Gardner Golf Course Saturday morning to compete in the District E Central Massachusetts Division I Cross Country Championship. Race time is 10:30 a.m.


Red Raiders Finish Second In Mid-Wach A
Marotta, Laakso, and Pankey Are Named Mid-Wach A All-Stars

October 26, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team ran to a second place finish in the Midland-Wachusett League A Division Championships held Friday afternoon at Tuft's University's Farm Course in Grafton. Wachusett Regional finished first with 36 points, followed by Fitchburg, 51, and North Middlesex, 93.

The Red Raiders were once again led by senior co-captains Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso, who finished second, 16:45, and fifth, 16:58, respectively, over the 5K course. Sophomores Everette Pankey, eleventh, 17:47; Jeremy Reid, sixteenth, 17:58; Craig Babineau; seventeenth, 18:01; Loi Trieu, twenty-second, 18:24; and Junior Adam Basilio, thirty-ninth, 19:33, rounded out the top seven. For their efforts Marotta, Laakso, and Pankey were named Mid-Wach A All-Stars.

In the combined Junior Varsity race Justin Kemp was thirtieth in 20:27, while teammates Paul Merrill, 22:25, and Andrew Miner, 25:17, finished ninety-third, and one hundred and thirty-fourth, respectively.

The Red Raiders travel to Franklin Park in Boston Saturday morning to compete in the 26th Annual MSTCA Cross Country Invitational Meet.


Red Raiders Outrun Patriots

October 22, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team concluded their dual meet season at 6-1, defeating North Middlesex, 24-32, on the Patriots' 3.0 mile home course.

The Red Raiders took five of the top seven spots led by Bryan Marotta's second place finish with a time of 16:53. Tom Laakso was third in 17:31, while sophomores Everette Pankey, fourth, 17:39; Jeremy Reid, seventh, 17:48; Craig Babineau, eighth, 17:49; and Loi Trieu, tenth, 18:51; completed the scoring. Also running well were Adam Basilio, fourteenth, 20:04; Justin Kemp, sixteenth, 20:33; Paul Merrill, eighteenth, 21:09; Chris Kanclerowicz, twenty-second, 22:26; and Andrew Miner, twenty-fourth, 26:04.

The Red Raiders travel to Grafton Friday afternoon to compete in the Midland-Wachusett League Division A Championships to be held on Tuft's University's 5k Farm Course. Race time is 2:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Capture Forty-Fifth Wachusett Invitational

October 20, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team captured the Forty-Fifth Annual 2001 Wachusett Invitational Cross Country Class A Championship with 61 points, out pointing defending champion St. John's, 66, and Wachusett Regional, 75, who finished second and third, respectively, in the ten team race.

The Red Raiders were led by Bryan Marotta, who finished second over the 2.4 mile course in 12:21. Tom Laakso was sixth in 12:50, while sophomores Everette Pankey, thirteenth, 13:16, Jeremy Reid, nineteenth, 13:28, Craig Babineau, twenty-first, 13:32, and Loi Trieu, thirty-third, 13:55. Junior Adam Basilio was seventh for the varsity, finishing fifty-seventh in 14:55. In the Class A Junior Varsity race Justin Kemp was nineteenth in 15:20, while teammates Chris Kanclerowicz finished forty-first, 16:59, Paul Merrill, forty-sixth, 17:28, and Andrew Miner, fifty-fourth, 20:03. Red Raiders Sweep Blue Devils

October 15, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team improved to 5-1, defeating the Leominster Blue Devils, 15-43, Monday afternoon at Coggshall Park.

The Red Raiders swept the top five spots led by Bryan Marotta, first, 15:34; Tom Laakso, second, 16:06; Everette Pankey, third, 16:24; Jeremy Reid, fourth, 16:41; and Craig Babineau, fifth, 16:54. Loi Trieu completed the scoring for the Red Raiders finishing eighth in 17:15. Also running well were Adam Basilio, fourteenth, 18:35; Justin Kemp, sixteenth, 19:09; Paul Merrill, twentieth, 20:39; Chris Kanclerowicz, twenty-second, 20:58; and Andrew Miner, twenty-third, 24:13.

The Red Raiders travel to Holden Saturday afternoon to compete in the Wachusett Invitational.


Red Raiders Down Scarlet Hawks
Pankey Makes Top Ten

October 10, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team improved to 4-1, defeating the Scarlet Hawks of Milford, 18-42, Tuesday afternoon at Coggshall Park.

The Red Raiders were led by Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso, who finished first, 15:30, and second, 15:53, respectively, over the 2.9 mile course. Everette Pankey was fourth, in 16:18; followed by Jeremy Reid, fifth, 16:31; Craig Babineau, sixth, 16:35; and Loi Trieu, seventh, 16:57. Pankey's time places him 10th on the all-time list for sophomores on the Coggshall course.

Also running well were Adam Basilio, thirteenth, 18:46; Justin Kemp, fifteenth, 19:44; Paul Merrill, seventeenth, 20:04; Chris Kanclerowicz, twenty-second, 21:54; and Andrew Miner, twenty-seventh, 24:34.

The Red Raiders host Leominster next Monday afternoon at Coggshall Park.


Red Raiders Finish Twelfth At Invitational

October 6, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School boys' cross country team ran to a 12th place finish out of 32 teams at the 10th Annual Bob McIntyre Cross Country Bay State Invitational Meet held Saturday morning at Franklin Park in Boston. In the 5k Varsity Division I race the team of Tom Laakso, 22nd, 17:01.3, Everette Pankey, 51st, 17:30.9, Jeremy Reid, 80th, 18:02.1, Craig Babineau, 107th, 18:13.1, Loi Trieu, 111th, 18:14.5, Adam Basilio, 205th, 20:07.2, and Justin Kemp, 208th, 20:10.7, combined for a team total of 339 points to secure the Red Raiders' position in the team standings.

In the Junior Varsity Division I race, running well were Paul Merrill, 222nd, 22:08.2, Chris Kanclerowicz, 256th, 23:06.5, and Andrew Miner, 301st, 25:54.8.

The Red Raiders host Milford Tuesday afternoon at Coggshall Park.


Red Raiders Lose First To Mountaineers

October 1, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team suffered their first loss of the season, dropping a hard fought 22-33 meet to Wachusett Regional on the Mountaineers' home course.

The Red Raiders were led by Bryan Marotta, who finished second over the 2.9 mile course in 15:56. Tom Laakso was fourth in 16:09, while Jeremy Reid was eighth, 16:53; Craig Babineau, ninth, 17:00; and Everette Pankey, tenth, 17:09. Also running well were Loi Trieu, thirteenth, 17:24; Adam Basilio, twenty-second, 19:04; Justin Kemp, twenty-fifth, 19:33; Paul Merrill, twenty-ninth, 21:10; Chris Kanclerowicz, thirtieth, 21:51, and Andrew Miner, thirty-first, 27:18.

Red Raiders Win Home Opener Over Crusaders
Team Overcomes Adversity

September 26, 2001 - Despite missing two of their top four runners due to illness, the Fitchburg High School men's cross country team still ran strong, defeating Groton-Dunstable, 24-33, on the Red Raider's home course at Coggshall Park.

The Red Raiders were led by Tom Laakso, who finished first over the 2.9 mile course in 16:12. Everette Pankey was second in 16:40, while Loi Trieu and Craig Babineau finished fourth, 16:52, and fifth, 16:53, respectively. Also running well were Adam Basilio, thirteenth, 18:30; Justin Kemp, twentieth, 19:23; Paul Merrill, twenty-sixth, 21:17; Chris Kanclerowicz, thirty-fifth, 22:38, and Andrew Miner, thirty-ninth, 26:25.

The Red Raiders travel to Wachusett Regional Monday afternoon to take on the Mountaineers.


Red Raider Harriers Outrun Colonials

September 20, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country improved to 2-0, outrunning Shrewsbury, 20-38, on the Colonials' home course at Dean Park, Shrewsbury.

The Red Raiders were once again led by senior co-captains, Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso, who finished first, 15:45, and second, 16:17, respectively, over the 3 mile course. Sophomores Everette Pankey, fourth, 16:50; Jeremy Reid, sixth, 17:22; Craig Babineau, seventh, 17:27; and Loi Trieu, eighth, 17:28, completed the scoring.

Also running well were Justin Kemp, fifteenth, 19:03; Adam Basilio, sixteenth, 19:56; Chris Kanclerowicz, twenty-first, 22:11; Paul Merrill, twenty-second, 22:25; and Andrew Miner, twenty-seventh, 26:39.

The Red Raiders host Groton-Dunstable next Wednesday afternoon at Coggshall Park.


Red Raiders Open With Win Over Oakmont

September 12, 2001 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team opened their dual meet season in fine fashion, defeating Oakmont Regional, 20-41, on the Spartan's rugged 5k course.

Oakmont senior Adam Johnson won the race with a time of 16:48, but the Red Raiders captured the next six positions to secure the victory. Senior co-captains Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso, finished second, 17:13, and third, 18:03, respectively, while sophomores Everette Pankey, fourth, 18:28; Jeremy Reid, fifth, 18:39; Loi Trieu, sixth, 18:42; Craig Babineau, seventh, 18:51; and junior Adam Basilio, tenth, 21:45; rounded out the scoring. Also running well for the Red Raiders were Chris Kanclerowicz, thirteenth, 25:05; Chris Brodeur, fifteenth, 28:56; Paul Merrill, sixteenth, 29:32; and Andrew Miner, seventeenth, 31:02.

The Red Raiders travel to Dean Park in Shrewsbury next Thursday afternoon to take on the Shrewsbury Colonials.


Red Raiders Prepare for Oakmont

September 7, 2001 - The 2001 Fitchburg High School men's cross country team completed their second solid week of practice Friday afternoon in preparation for their season opener in Ashburnham next Wednesday, when they take on the Oakmont Regional Spartans, led by senior Adam Johnson.

Returning Co-captains Bryan Marotta and Tom Laakso greeted returning lettermen Everette Pankey, Craig Babineau, Jeremy Reid, Justin Kemp, Chris Brodeur, Loi Trieu, Adam Basilio, and Andrew Miner. Newcomer Paul Merrill rounds out this year's team. The Red Raiders return their entire front seven from last season as they look to improve upon last year's second place finish in Mid-Wach A, and their fifth place finish in the Central Massachusetts Division One Tournament. Marotta, Laakso, Pankey, Babineau, Kemp, Trieu, and Reid, all attended Camp Foss in mid-August, establishing a solid base in preparation for the upcoming season.


Red Raiders Announce First Official Day of Practice
Physical Date Announced

August 6, 2001 - The 2001 Fitchburg High School men's cross country track team will have it's first official practice Thursday, August 23, starting at 2:15 p.m. Fitchburg High School cross country runners are also reminded that they should be well into Phase I of their training, and should be preparing for the upcoming season.

Cross country candidates will meet in the Field House for team warm-up and pre-season information. The Fitchburg High School Athletic Department has announced that Dr. Paul Cochrane, team physician, will provide athletic physicals for the 2001-2002 season at the Fitchburg High School Field House, on Monday, August 20, at 8:00 a.m. Returning lettermen and first year runners are reminded that they must provide a parental permission slip, pay the school user fee of $15, and have received a physical examination within the last calendar year in order to participate in practices and competitions. Runners attending the first practice are reminded to come in proper running attire, and should expect practices to last two hours.
