2002 Midland-Wachusett A League All-Stars Announced

November 11, 2002- Named a Midland-Wachusett A League All-Star for 2002 was Everette Pankey for his top 10 performance in the League Championship.


2002 Cross Country Luncheon

November 9, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team celebrated the conclusion of the 2002 cross country season Saturday afternoon at a luncheon reception held at Slattery’s Restaurant.

Receiving recognition for their efforts during the season were junior Everette Pankey, who received the Most Valuable Runner, along with the annual Mark Gionet Award for the first Fitchburg High School runner versus Leominster; the Most Improved Runner, which went to Justin Kemp, who has improved his personal record on the 2.9 mile Coggshall course from 25:04 to 18:12, a cumulative improvement of 6:52 over three seasons; the Coach's Award went to senior Captain Adam Basilio for his leadership and commitment to the team; and the Freshmen Award, which went to Michael Carbone, as the leading overall point scorer amongst the freshmen.

These athletes, along with Mike Alamed, Craig Babineau, Andrew Bisol, Chris Brodeur, Kevin Carriere, Chris Kanclerowicz, Dan Kirouac, T.J. Loughlin, Kris Maillet, Paul Merrill, Jeremy Reid, Loi Trieu, and Steve Wanner, all received certificates of recognition for their hard work and dedication to Fitchburg High School cross country.

Coach Woods would like to personally congratulate his team and everyone else who contributed to the team's success throughout the 2002 season.


Red Raiders Finish Ninth
In The M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Division I Championship

November 9, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team ran to a ninth place finish in the M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Division I Cross Country Championship race held Saturday morning at the Gardner Golf Course.

Fitchburg was once again led by junior Everette Pankey, who ran 16:11 over the 2.9 mile course, finishing twenty-ninth overall. Fellow juniors Loi Trieu, fifty-sixth, 16:49; Craig Babineau, sixtieth, 16:51; and Jeremy Reid, sixty-fourth, 16:55; along with seniors Adam Basilio, seventy-sixth, 17:13, and Andrew Bisol, eightieth,17:19; and junior Kevin Carriere, one-hundredth, 17:53, completed the team scoring.

The Red Raiders conclude their season with a luncheon reception at Slattery’s Restaurant directly following the conclusion of the day’s races.


Red Raiders Announce Awards Luncheon Reception
To Follow Directly After The M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Championships

November 5, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School cross country men's and women's coaching staff invite athletes and parents to a luncheon reception to be held at Slattery's Back Room Restaurant, Saturday afternoon, November 9, directly following the M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Championships, scheduled to take place this Saturday morning at the Gardner Golf Course.

The approximate time frame of the luncheon reception will be 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. We are asking a modest fee of $7.00 per person to help defray the cost of the menu which will consist of an assortment of cold cuts, salad, chips, and soda. This will also be an opportunity for the coaches to recognize their teams' achievements, and present some special awards for individual accomplishments.

Red Raiders Perform Well At M.S.T.C.A. Invite
Pankey Breaks Top 50

November 2, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team turned in a number of fine performances at the 27th Annual Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Invitational Cross Country Meet held Saturday morning at Franklin Park in Boston.

In the 5k 11th-12th Grade Division I race the Red Raiders were led by Everette Pankey, who finished 42nd in 17:35.01. Teammates Craig Babineau, 87th, 18:10.11; Loi Trieu, 94th, 18:15.16; Jeremy Reid, 114th, 18:33.86; Kevin Carriere, 157th, 19:06.96; Mike Carbone, 158th, 19:07.69; Andrew Bisol, 192nd, 19:37.52; Justin Kemp, 218th, 20:01.99; Paul Merrill, 280th, 21:10.59; Chris Kanclerowicz, 297th, 21:33.04; and Dan Kirouac, 323rd, 22:48.97; were the Red Raiders other top performances. Representing Fitchburg in the 3k 9th Grade Division I race was Mike Alamed, who finished 138th, in 12:35.95.

Fitchburg travels to the Gardner Golf Course next Saturday morning to compete in the M.I.A.A. Central Massachusetts Cross Country Championships with the Division I men's race scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m.


Red Raiders Finish Third At Mid-Wach A Championships
Pankey Earns All-Star Berth

October 25, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team ran to a third place finish in the Mid-Wach A League Cross Country Championships held Friday afternoon at Coggshall Park. The Red Raiders put together their best times of the year, and almost caught runner-up Shrewsbury, falling short by four points, 74-78. The championship went to state power Wachusett Regional, which crushed the field, finishing with 16 points, to dominate the meet.

Leading the way for the Red Raiders in the Varsity Race over the 2.9 mile course were Everette Pankey, 15:47.2, eighth; Craig Babineau, 15:54.7, thirteenth; Loi Trieu, 16:04.2, fourteenth; Jeremy Reid, 16:15.2, sixteenth; Andrew Bisol, 16:48.3, twenty-seventh; Adam Basilio, 17:03.2, thirty-second; and Mike Carbone, 17:10.8, thirty-fourth. All of the times were personal bests for Fitchburg. By finishing in the top ten Pankey was also named a Mid-Wach A All-Star for second consecutive year.

Also running their fastest times of the year for Fitchburg in the Junior Varsity Race were Kevin Carriere, 17:21.5, fourth; Justin Kemp, 18:12.6, nineteenth; Mike Alamed, 18:23.3, twenty-third; T.J. Loughlin, 18:32.4, thirtieth; Paul Merrill, 18:53.9, thirty-fourth; Dan Kirouac, 20:16.4, fifty-ninth; Kris Maillet, 20:26, sixty-first; and Chris Brodeur, 21:43.6, eighty-second.

The Red Raiders travel to Franklin Park next Saturday morning to compete in the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Invitational with the first race scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m.


Red Raiders Complete Dual Meet Season
Defeat Algonquin Regional In Tune-Up For Mid-Wach A Champioships

October 22, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team finished their dual meet season at 5-3, with a convincing 19-39 win over Algonquin Regional Wednessday afternoon on the Tomahawks’ home course.

Leading the way over the 3.0 mile course were Everette Pankey, 17:05, Craig Babineau, 17:13, and Loi Trieu, 17:25, who took the top three spots to secure the win. Completing the scoring for the Red Raiders were Jeremy Reid, fifth, 17:44; Adam Basilio, eighth, 18:07; Andrew Bisol, ninth, 18:09; and Kevin Carriere, eleventh, 18:28.

Also running well for Fitchburg were Mike Carbone, twelfth, 18:29; Justin Kemp, seventeenth, 19:11; Steve Wanner, twenty-second, 19:26; Mike Alamed, thirtieth, 19:47; Chris Brodeur, thirty-third, 20:19; T.J. Loughlin, thirty-fifth, 20:36; Paul Merrill, thirty-sixth, 20:37; Chris Kanclerowicz, thirty-ninth, 20:49; Dan Kirouac, forty-third, 21:25; and Kris Maillet, fifty-fifth, 23:00.

The Red Raiders host the Mid-Wach A Championships this Friday afternoon at Coggshall Park with the first race scheduled to get underway at 2:00 p.m.


Red Raiders Finish Fourth At Wachusett Invite
Carbone Finishes Third In Freshmen Race

October 19, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team ran to a fourth place finish in the Forty-Sixth Annual Wachusett Invitational Cross Country Class A Championship held Saturday afternoon at Wachusett Regional High School.

In the Class A 2.4 mile Varsity Race the Red Raiders were led by Craig Babineau, sixteenth, 13:21; Everette Pankey, seventeenth, 13:21; Loi Trieu, twenty-third, 13:31; Jeremy Reid, thirty-fourth, 14:07; Adam Basilio, thirty-seventh, 14:14; Andrew Bisol, forty-first, 14:27; and Justin Kemp, fifty-second, 15:15; to complete the team scoring.

In the Class A Junior Varsity race Paul Merrill was twenty-first in 15:40, while teammates T.J. Loughlin, twenty-third, 15:48; Chris Brodeur, twenty-seventh, 16:09; Chris Kanclerowicz, thirty-ninth, 16:49; and Dan Kirouac, fortieth, 16:58; were Fitchburg’s top runners.

In the All Freshmen Race Mike Carbone had an outstanding race finishing third overall in 14:18, while fellow freshmen Mike Alamed also had a strong race, finishing twentieth in 15:25.

The Red Raiders travel to Northboro Tuesday afternoon for their final dual meet of the season versus Algonquin Regional.


Strategy Pays Off
Red Raiders Sweep Away Blue Devils

October 16, 2002 - Using classic cross country strategy, the Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team ran the man to perfection, pulling away from Leominster’s top runner with a mile to go, to sweep the top three spots, and clinch the meet, 20-38, on the Blue Devil’s home course.

Capturing the top three places in the rainswept 2.8 mile race were Everette Pankey, 16:27; Craig Babineau, 16:32; and Loi Trieu, 16:32; while Adam Basilio, 17:39, sixth; Mike Carbone, 17:53, eighth; Andrew Bisol, 17:54, ninth; and Justin Kemp, 18:42, eleventh; rounded out the team scoring.

Also running well were Mike Alamed, 19:13, fourteenth; Paul Merrill, 19:28, sixteenth; Steve Wanner, 19:33, eighteenth; Chris Brodeur, 19:56, twentieth; T.J. Loughlin, 19:57, twenty-first; Dan Kirouac, 20:19, twenty-fourth; and Kris Maillet, 22:08, twenty-sixth.

The Red Raiders travel to Holden Saturday afternoon to compete in the Wachusett Invitational. With the freshmen race scheduled to get underway at 2:30 p.m.


Red Raiders To Host 2002 Mid-Wach A League
Cross Country Championships At Coggshall Park

October 11, 2002 - Fitchburg High School received confirmation this week that Coggshall Park was selected as the host site for the 2002 Mid-Wach A League Cross Country Championships.

The meet will be held on Friday, October 25, with the first race scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. A total of four races involving seven teams will be run with the men's varsity first, followed by the women’s varsity, then the men’s junior varsity, and women’s junior varsity races, respectively.


Red Raiders Fly Past Scarlet Hawks
Pankey, Babineau, And Trieu Break Course Record

October 8, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team evened it’s record at 3-3, defeating the Milford Scarlet Hawks, 25-31, Tuesday afternoon at Milford.

Leading the way was junior Everette Pankey, who shattered the the 2.9 mile course record of 15:29 by 27 seconds, finishing first in 15:02; while junior teammates Craig Babineau, 15:22, third; and Loi Trieu, 15:23, fourth; also eclisped the previous record. Completing the scoring for the Red Raiders were seniors Adam Basilio, 15:55, eighth; Andrew Bisol, 16:08, ninth; and freshman Mike Carbone, 16:29, tenth.

Also running well were Paul Merrill, 17:02, fifteenth; Kevin Carriere, 17:07, sixteenth; Mike Alamed, 17:28, eighteenth; Steve Wanner, 17:33, nineteenth; Chris Brodeur, 17:36, twentieth; Dan Kirouac, 19:26, twenty-sixth; and Kris Maillet, 20:09, twenty-seventh.

The Red Raiders travel to Leominster next Wednesday afternoon with the race scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Perform Well At Invitational

October 5, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men's cross country team ran to a 35th place finish out of fifty teams at the 11th Annual Bob McIntyre Cross Country Bay State Invitational Meet held Saturday morning at Franklin Park in Boston. In the 5k Varsity Division I race the team of Craig Babineau, 106th, 18:22.4; Loi Trieu, 115th, 18:30.6; Everette Pankey, 211th, 19:50.6; Adam Basilio, 217th, 20:05.0; Kevin Carriere, 256th, 21:01.9; and Steve Wanner, 264th, 21:54.0; combined for the team score.

In the Junior Varsity Division I race, running well were T.J. Loughlin, 182nd, 21:25.4; Paul Merrill, 218th, 21:57.3; Chris Brodeur, 272nd, 22:54.10; and Dan Kirouac, 319th, 24:10.8.

Running in the combined Freshmen 3k race were Mike Carbone, 49th, 11:49.7; Mike Alamed, 148th, 12:43.9; and Kris Maillet, 329th, 14:42.8.

The Red Raiders travel to Milford Tuesday afternoon with the race scheduled to get underway at 4:00 p.m.


Unbeaten Colonials Defeat Red Raiders

October 3, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team saw it’s record fall to 2-3, losing to the unbeaten Shrewsbury Colonials, 23-34, Thursday afternoon at Coggshall Park.

Running career bests on the 2.9 mile Coggshall course were Everette Pankey, who finished second in 16:05, and fellow junior Craig Babineau, who finished fifth in 16:23. Also scoring for Fitchburg were Loi Trieu, 16:50, sixth; and seniors Adam Basilio, 17:34, ninth; and Andrew Bisol, 17:35, tenth. Both Basilio’s and Bisol’s times were personal bests.

Also running well, with many Coggshall personal bests were Kevin Carriere, 18:10, twelfth; Mike Carbone, 18:10, thirteenth; Mike Alamed, 18:59, sixteenth; Steve Wanner, 19:25, eighteenth; T.J. Loughlin, 19:39, nineteenth; Paul Merrill, 20:00, twenty-first; Chris Brodeur, 20:44, twenty-fifth; Dan Kirouac, 21:16, twenty-sixth; and Kris Maillet, 22:02, twenty-eighth.

The Red Raiders travel to Franklin Park Saturday morning to compete in the Bay State Invitational. The first race of the day is at 10:00 a.m.


Red Raiders Defeat North Middlesex Regional

September 23, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team improved to 2-2, by defeating Mid-Wach A rival North Middlesex Regional, 19-36, Monday afternoon at Coggshall Park.

Sweeping the top three spots for the Red Raiders on the 2.9 mile course were Everette Pankey, 16:19; Craig Babineau, 16:39; and Loi Trieu, 16:53. Running personal bests on the Coggshall course were Andrew Bisol, 17:43, and Adam Basilio, 17:47, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively, enabling Fitchburg to clinch the meet.

Also running well for Fitchburg were Steve Wanner, 18:53, eleventh; Paul Merrill, 19:25, thirteenth; Mike Alamed, 19:26, fourteenth; Mike Carbone, 19:30, fifteenth; Kevin Carriere, sixteenth, 20:03; T.J. Loughlin, 20:17, seventeenth; Dan Kirouac, 21:33, twentieth; Chris Kanclerowicz, 21:48, twenty-first; and Kris Maillet, 23:13, twenty-fourth.

The Red Raiders host Shrewsbury next Thursday afternoon with the race scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.


Defending District E Division I Champions Defeat Red Raiders

September 19, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team was defeated by defending District E Division I Champions Wachusett Regional, 16-44, Thursday afternoon at Coggshall Park.

Leading the way for the Red Raiders over the 2.9 mile course was Everette Pankey, who finished fifth in 16:23. Also breaking seventeen minutes was Loi Trieu, seventh, 16:50, and Craig Babineau, eighth, 16:56. Andrew Bisol, twelfth, 18:08; and Adam Basilio, thirteenth, 18:19, both ran P.R.’s to round out Fitchburg’s top five.

Also running well, and showing steady improvement were: Steve Wanner, fourteenth, 18:38; Kevin Carriere, fifteenth, 18:42; Mike Carbone, twenty-third, 20:33; T.J. Loughlin, twenty-fourth, 20:36; Mike Alamed, twenty-fifth, 20:44; Paul Merrill, twenty-sixth, 20:59; Chris Brodeur, thirty-second, 22:14; Dan Kirouac, thirty-third, 22:27; and Kris Maillet, thirty-fourth, 22:32.

The Red Raiders host Mid-Wach A rival North Middlesex next Monday afternoon at Coggshall Park. Race time is 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Outrun Oakmont Spartans For First Win Of The Season

September 16, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team evened their record at 1-1, defeating the Oakmont Regional Spartans, 20-39, Monday afternoon at Coggshall Park.

Leading the way for the Red Raiders over the 2.9 mile course by capturing five of the first six positions were Craig Babineau, 16:52, Everette Pankey, 17:29, Loi Trieu, 17:51, Andrew Bisol 18:30, and Adam Basilio, 18:36, who swept second through sixth place to clinch the meet. Steve Wanner, 19:12, tenth, and Kevin Carriere, 19:19, eleventh, also impacted the meet by displacing Oakmont’s fifth runner to complete the team scoring.

Also running well for Fitchburg were Mike Carbone, 19:34, twelfth; Paul Merrill, 19:38, thirteenth; Mike Alamed, 19:44, fourteenth, 21:54; T.J. Loughlin, 20:36, sixteenth; Dan Kirouac, 22:16, nineteenth; Chris Brodeur, 23:03, twenty-first; and Kris Maillet, 25:35, twenty-third.

The Red Raiders host the Wachusett Regional Mountaineers this Thursday afternoon at Coggshall Park with the race getting underway at 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Lose Season Opener To Crusaders

September 12, 2002 - The Fitchburg High School men’s cross country team lost their season opener to Groton-Dunstable, 26-30, on the Crusader’s 3.1 mile home course.

The Red Raiders were led by Everette Pankey, who finished first in 17:25, while teammates Jeremy Reid, fifth, 17:55; Loi Trieu, sixth, 18:09; Craig Babineau, seventh, 18:15; Andrew Bisol, eleventh, 19:02; Adam Basilio, twelth, 19:13; and Justin Kemp, fifteenth, 19:21, rounded out the top seven for the Red Raiders.

Also running well for Fitchburg were Steve Wanner, twentieth, 19:56; Kevin Carriere, twenty-fourth, 20:37; Mike Carbone, twenty-fifth, 20:46; Mike Alamed, thirty-second, 21:54; Paul Merrill, thirty-eighth, 22:50; T.J. Loughlin, thirty-ninth, 22:55; Dan Kirouac, fortieth, 22:58; Chris Kanclerowicz, forty-fourth, 24:09; and Kris Maillet, forty-seventh, 25:07.

The Red Raiders host Oakmont Regional next Monday afternoon at Coggshall Park. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.


Red Raiders Complete Third Week of Practice
Open Up Against Groton-Dunstable Thursday Afternoon

September 9, 2002 - The 2002 Fitchburg High School men's cross country team completed it's first three weeks of practice Friday afternoon in preparation for their season opener this Thursday afternoon at Groton-Dunstable.

The Red Raiders welcome back the core of last year's team led by junior Mid-Wach A All-Star Everette Pankey, who along with fellow juniors Jeremy Reid, Craig Babineau, Loi Trieu, and Justin Kemp, along with senior captain, Adam Basilio, should provide Fitchburg with a solid front six. Vying for the seventh spot on the team, and adding depth to the squad, will be veteran seniors Paul Merrill, Chris Brodeur, and Chris Kanclerowicz, while newcomers, senior Andrew Bisol, and juniors T.J. Loughlin, Dan Kirouac, Kevin Carriere, and Steve Wanner, promise to improve upon Fitchburg's overall depth. The Red Raiders are also excited about freshmen newcomers Mike Alamed, Mike Carbone, Kris Maillet, and Mike Sarao, who will be expected to contribute to the future of the Red and Grey Thinclads.

Thursday's season opener at Groton-Dunstable is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.
